  • PNW Debut & Venue: The first-ever Pacific Northwest Pop-A-Shot Qualifier took place on May 14, 2026, at the historic, movie-theater-turned-arcade QuarterWorld in Portland, OR.
  • The Leaderboard: Open play saw blistering scores, topped by DAVIDKIRK with a high score of 173 PTS; bracket play was defined by 5th-seed JSCHWAB's massive underdog run to the finals after upsetting the #1 seed.
  • The Champion: In a thrilling Best-of-5 finale that went down to the final seconds of Game 5, NICKYBUCKETZ defeated JSCHWAB to claim redemption for his 2025 loss and punch his ticket to the 2026 National Championship.

The Pacific Northwest is famous for its coffee, its rain, micro craft breweries, and its legendary arcade culture. But on May 14th, 2026, Portland, Oregon became the epicenter of arcade basketball with the Portland Pop-A-Shot Qualifier.

QuarterWorld Arcade played host to our third West Coast event over two seasons and our first-ever qualifier in the Pacific Northwest. Over the past two years, we had qualifiers in Los Angeles and San Francisco during NBA All-Star Weekend. The energy in Portland proved that the PNW doesn't just play arcade games for fun; they are also very very good at them.

Setting the Stage: An Arcade With a History

If you know anything about Portland, you know it’s a city obsessed with pinball and arcade history. QuarterWorld Arcade is a crown jewel of that scene. Housed in a historic old movie theater, the venue's architectural layout adds a dramatic, retro flair, perfect for an arcade basketball tournament.

The hype started early. While official open play didn't kick off until 5:00 PM, players were already dialing in their rhythm across the street at the Space Room Lounge, tearing it up on the Pop-A-Shot Elite proudly displayed in the front window.

Once doors opened at QuarterWorld, the atmosphere was electric. We deployed our virtual queue system so participants could wander the arcade and enjoy the retro games while waiting their turn. But honestly? No one wanted to leave. A massive crowd packed tight amongst the varying number of arcade games completely transfixed by the high-scoring clinic taking place under the venue's famous Tesla Coil stage.

The Qualifiers: A High-Score Heavyweight Fight

While local Portland talent showed up in droves, this event quickly turned into a national showdown. Heavy hitters flew in from across the country to secure their tickets, including qualifier staples DAVIDKIRK, NICKYBUCKETZ, JANTAWN, and JSCHWAB. We also welcomed a familiar face from our Virtual League, NEUPACC, who made the trip out with fellow Denver, CO qualifier Bobby Derian.

The scoring pace was relentless. Within the very first hour, a staggering 121 points became the baseline just to eye a spot in the finals. By the time the buzzer sounded on open play, the leaderboard looked like a masterpiece:

Bracket Madness: Upsets and Budding Rivalries

Despite the turnout being made up mostly of locals in a region we haven't been to before, the competition was stiff but was also made up of some of the traveling competitors who are yearning to get their shot at the championship.

The Elite 8 Leaderboard

The leaderboard going into the bracket play, of the top players of the evening, looked like this:

  1. DAVIDKIRK - 173 PTS
  2. NICKYBUCKETZ - 167 PTS
  3. JANTAWN - 155 PTS
  4. NEUPACC - 154 PTS
  5. JSCHWAB - 153 PTS
  6. RPETERSEN - 147 PTS
  7. _ZA - 138 PTS
  8. CONRADISH - 136 PTS

When the tournament shifted over to the Best-of-3 bracket style, the top three seeds: DAVIDKIRK, NICKYBUCKETZ, and JANTAWN steamrolled their way into the Semifinals. The real chaos started in the 4v5 matchup. JSCHWAB pulled off a thrilling upset over the Virtual League star NEUPACC in a grueling 3-game series.

That win sparked a fire. In the Semifinals, JSCHWAB went on an absolute heater, shocking the entire venue by taking down the #1 seed, who held the top score the entire evening, in only 2 games to lock in a spot in the Finals.

On the other side of the bracket, we witnessed the birth of a genuine classic. NICKYBUCKETZ faced off against JANTAWN for what was remarkably their fourth head-to-head matchup since their first meeting in San Antonio. Is this Pop-A-Shot's next great rivalry? It certainly felt like it. NickyBucketz honed in on his scoring when it mattered most, and proceeded to the finals in 2 games.

The Finals: A Game 5 Thriller for the Ages

It all came down to this: NICKYBUCKETZ vs. JSCHWAB in a Best-of-5 showdown. The matchup was an experienced former championship competitor vs an up and coming player with the hot hand. Every single game went down to the final buzzer, with both players trading buckets at a blistering pace. JSCHWAB brought the heat but NickyBucketz brought the determination to make it back.

Tied 2-2, the entire tournament came down to the final seconds of Game 5. With the crowd roaring under the glow of the QuarterWorld lights, NICKYBUCKETZ sank the defining buckets in the dying seconds to capture the Portland crown!

The Road To Redemption

For NickyBucketz, this victory is sweet redemption after making it to the Semi Finals of the 2025 National Championship and 2 losses in the finals of the Atlanta and New York City Qualifiers this season. With this win, his ticket is officially punched for the 2026 National Championship!

Missed the Action?

Portland brought the noise, the history, and the highest qualifying scores to date. The 2026 season is almost wrapped up with our Super Qualifier in Chicago this June and Pop-A-Palooza this July for a chance to win a cash prize.

Huge thanks to QuarterWorld Arcade and the incredible Portland community for making our Pacific Northwest debut unforgettable. See you at the National Championship!
